We can’t all have summer vacation, but we can imagine one. This is an invitation to do some grown-up summer reading and travel through imagined haunted geographies.
This course is for you if you want a more-than-book club built on resonance, some theory, and a hunger for more than “I liked it”. If you enjoy talking and thinking through literature with others, through a queer lens, and experimenting with embodied approaches to ways of reading, writing, and engaging with material, this is for you.
(or you just want to talk about books with Kate Holden and other cool people?)
In this course, employing queer theory and spectrality studies and a ghostly, haunted ethos, we engage with themes, theories, and literary works that engage with varied settings and evocations of haunting. Readings will be sent each week the start of the course:
The Haunted City: Have I been here before?
Ruins and Wrecks: sites and afterlives
Strangers, Outsiders, and Strange Lands: Ghostly Travels or Camus and You
Otherworlds and Underworlds: Beyond, below, and betwixt worlds
Haunting and personal cartography: the impossible and imagined maps
Liminal spaces: Terminals and Terminality, and (un)ending
The first half of our session is devoted to watching a recorded talk (optional to do before the session) and/or engaging with a creative prompt, and the second half is devoted to discussion.
